Prophetic Medicine - The Prophet's Guidance on Treating Epilepsy
Sister Hawa John
(The Ummah Institute)
It is reported in the two Sahihs on the authority of 'Ata Ibn Abi Rabah who said, Ibn Abbas said to me, "Shall I show you a woman of the people of Paradise?" I said, " Yes." He said, 'This black lady came to the Prophet (SAW) and said, ' I got attacks of epilepsy and my body became uncovered; please supplicate to Allah for me.' Thep Prophet (SAW) said, 'If wish, you can be patient and enter paradise; and if you wish i will ask Allah to cure you.' She said, ' I will remain patient,' and added,' bv I became uncovered,so please call upon Allah for me so that I may remain uncovered.' So he supplicated to Allah fo her."
TYPES OF EPILEPSY
1.Epilepsy caused by evil and negative forces (wicked Jinn)
2.Epilepsy caused by psychological disorders.
Physicians can only treat the latter. On the other hand, both the epileptic and the one who treats him have mutual role in the process of treatment. The epileptic himself should trust and the Creator of these jinn and keep seeking refuge in Allah both in his heart and with his tongue. This is because the fighter cannot gain victory over his enemy unless he has two means: a proper weapon and strength. He needs both of these in order to overcome his epilepsy and cannot depend on only one.Further more, if he does not possess either of these, the treatment will not work.
Whoever treats the disease should also have the above mentioned means.
It is reported by Ahmad and Al-Hakin in Al- Mustadrak from Ubai Ibn Ka'b (RA) who said, "I was sitting with the Prophet (SAW) when an Arab man came to him and said, ' O Prophet of Allah my brother suffers from a pain.' The Messenger (SAW) said,' what kind of pain does he suffer from?' He said, 'He was touched by a jinn.'The Prophet(SAW) said, 'Bring him to me.' The man brought his brother before the Prophet who sought refuge in Allah for him by reciting Surah Al- Fatihah (and other verses of the Qur'an). It is stated at the end of the hadith that the man recovered without feeling any pain.
